It started on the Combat Talon.
Ken enlisted as an aircraft crew chief with Air Force Special Operations and flew as enlisted aircrew aboard the MC-130E Combat Talon, the low-level, night-flying workhorse of special operations.

2006 – 2010 · Intelligence officer · 89th Airlift Wing
Briefing Air Force One.
As an intelligence officer at Joint Base Andrews, Ken protected the President's aircraft and senior leaders on missions to 67 countries, and put mission planning on a three-dimensional globe before anyone else did.
- Pioneered 3D fly-through flight planning with the Google Earth development team; National Geographic featured the work.
- Presidential pre-mission briefings rated "best ever" by the Presidential Airlift Group commander.
- Hand-selected to support the President's APEC missions to Peru, China, and Singapore.
- 89th Airlift Wing Company Grade Officer of the Year, 2009.
2010 – 2013 · Mission Operations Commander · AFSOC
Seeing the target in three dimensions.
Leading special operations intelligence crews around the clock, Ken turned full-motion video from MQ-1 and MQ-9 orbits into 3D models that raid forces could plan against.
- Built 3D target-compound models in SketchUp that supported special operations strikes, including Navy SEAL raids.
- Created the squadron's first 360-degree 3D ISR product; the new tactic drove the capture of three high-value targets.
- Enabled intelligence for nine MQ-1 and MQ-9 orbits across five theaters: 10,495 hours and 130 strikes.
- Designed one-click access to 136 sites and 350 ISR feeds, making operations 27% faster; deployed 184 days to Iraq.
2013 – 2017 · U.S. Central Command · J2
One picture from four hundred databases.
In the fight against ISIS, Ken fused the Intelligence Community's data into a single picture and built the feed that reached the White House Situation Room and the Secretary of Defense.
- Built and architected Go-IC, the Intelligence Community data fusion feed; drove government-wide adoption of geospatial visualization tools.
- Unified 400+ IC databases and hand-built the J2 Common Intelligence Picture that enabled the first near-real-time targeting decisions.
- Team lead for mapping the flood effects of a Mosul Dam failure had ISIS destroyed the dam.
- Led the first combat tasking of satellite nighttime-light detection, the sensing behind the iconic image of Earth at night, to locate enemy forces.
- Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
2017 – 2019 · Air Force Global Strike Command · 608th AOC
Bombers, quantum, and hypersonics.
At the command responsible for the nation's bombers and ICBMs, Ken built AI and machine-learning tools for analysts and wrote on the technologies that would define the next fight.
- Led 12 deep-dive studies on the 10- and 15-year outlook for the bomber and ICBM enterprise; standout in two nuclear command exercises.
- Authored the guidelines for the B-21's flight-deck heads-up display; editor and contributor, USAF Hypersonic Weapon White Paper.
- Built AI and machine-learning analyst tools with theater air operations centers; co-founded the Air Force quantum information science working group.
- Executive officer for two Air Force Scientific Advisory Board studies directed by the Secretary of the Air Force.
2019 – 2022 · National Reconnaissance Office · The White House
Twenty-four hours to one second.
As deputy chief of the NRO's Air Force team, Ken was pulled into the rooms where national AI policy was written, then deployed that thinking into a live crisis.
- Air Force Lead, White House AI Futures Working Group (67 members); shaped the President's FY20 AI strategy.
- Founding member, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) AI Research and Development Working Group; the 10-year AI R&D spending strategy he helped accelerate was signed at $1.5B six months early.
- Commissioned three AI and automation programs that cut EUCOM crisis battle damage assessment from 24 hours to 1 second, and cut the time to warn of adversary fighters and bombers by 95%.
- Defense Venture Capital Fellow: drove $500M in advanced-technology contracts to 15 organizations.
- Ranked #1 of 37 joint-service O-4s and O-5s; built the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs' Ukraine Common Operational and Intelligence Picture.
EUCOM crisis battle damage assessment · 2022
Three AI and automation programs he commissioned. Warning of adversary fighters and bombers came 95% faster, and allied alerts dropped from 30 minutes to 3 seconds.
2022 – 2024 · Defense Intelligence Agency
Space, then innovation.
Ken led DIA's space and counterspace analysis in its science and technology mission, then moved to the agency's innovation office to decide which technologies the government should back.
- Deputy Chief, Space and Counterspace Analysis: led 35 senior analysts supporting the President, Congress, and the Secretary of Defense.
- Fielded an R&D system 18 months early, resulting in two U.S. Treasury international sanctions.
- Deputy Chief, Future Capabilities and Innovation: led DoD investment efforts across NeedipeDIA, In-Q-Tel, and DIU, with diligence on 1,000+ venture offerings.
- Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2024 after more than two decades of service.
